One Gesture, Four Rules: Why Path Puzzles Work
Math Logic Path is built on a single interaction — draw a path through a number grid. Four different rules turn that one gesture into four different ways of thinking.
Good puzzle games are easy to learn and slow to master. The trick, usually, is a small rule set with deep consequences. Math Logic Path takes that idea one step further: the interaction never changes at all. You draw a path through adjacent cells on a number grid. Only the rule wrapped around that gesture changes — and with it, the entire texture of the game.
Here is the thinking each rule rewards.
Target Sum — planning backwards
Target Sum gives you a number (25, say) and asks for a path that adds up to exactly that. Beginners start at a big number and hope. Experienced players do something different: they subtract. If the target is 25 and the grid has a tempting 11 near the corner, the question becomes “can I find 14 near it?” — and suddenly you’re planning the path from the destination backwards.
The running total is always visible, and the small numbers on the grid turn out to be worth more than the big ones: they fine-tune the landing.
Zero Out — managing two books
Zero Out seeds the grid with positive and negative numbers and asks for exactly zero. Now every cell has an opposite, and the puzzle is pairing them off in connected order. The skill is bookkeeping: keeping the running balance small enough that a single opposite value can close it out.
It is the same mental motion as balancing a budget, which may be why it feels so satisfying when the path snaps to zero.
Descending Path — commitment
Descending Path is the strictest of the four: every next number must be smaller than the one before it. No exceptions, no recovery. A path is a chain of decisions you cannot take back, and the grid is full of high numbers placed exactly where greed leads you into a dead end.
The lesson arrives fast: scan before you start. The first cell matters more than any other. (If you like this feeling, the arcade mode hand-builds levels around it.)
Alternating Path — rhythm
Alternating Path asks only that you switch parity every step: odd, even, odd, even. It sounds trivial until you realize parity has nothing to do with size — a 2 and an 8 are both dead ends after a 5. You’re reading a completely different property of the numbers, and after a few games you start seeing the grid as a checkerboard of rhythm rather than a field of values.
That perceptual shift — same grid, new eyes — is the whole point of the app.
The shared skill
Under all four rules sits one transferable habit: look at the whole board before you commit. Orthogonal mode punishes haste (edges only, fewer escape routes); diagonal mode forgives it. But in every module, the players who improve are the ones who spend two seconds scanning before the first touch.
